NW Method

Disclosure: I was invited and given free product to attend this event in exchange for a blog review. Although, I have received free product that does not effect my opinion. If I didn’t like it I would tell you.

FaithFueled Mom in the City

f you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen I was Mom in the City last week. Quickly walking through the busy streets of New York Time Square it was so much fun to be invited to Workout with Nicole Winhoffer and enjoy treats from Pure Protein. When I got the invitation from Pure Protein, I was so excited to be working out with Nicole Winhoffer. She has a reputation for whipping into shape some of the “best bodies in the entertainment industry” the list is extensive, but some of the highlights include Stella McCartney, Madonna, Rachel Weisz, Molly Sims, Naomi Watts, Mya, Abbie Cornish, Spike Jonze, Jennifer Connelly, and Steven Klein. Just to name drop a few and now De Bolton, you guys know how I love to crack myself up.  The old me aspired to see her name in lights, but now I just want to stay fit, be fit and have fun! That’s why when I left the Pure Protein NW Method experience I was completely inspired.

The day started off like any pretend New Yorker commuter’s day, jumped on the train had some private thoughts (that isn’t normal for this stay at home mom who’s thoughts can easily be interrupted.) Read a fantastic book, rereading Crazy Love and then in real “New Yorker” style was surfing the crowd like a pro. I got to the Diamond Horseshoe a little early and Nicole was so friendly. I was caught off guard. She was taking some photos for Pure Protein and stopped mid-pose and gave me a huge smile and welcome! I don’t know if it was written on my face that I needed a friendly face but it was what I need.

It was a pretty cool experience. Nicole opened up with this dance where she totally owned it but little did we know until the end that she was going to skip the performance all together. She pushed passed her discomfort and made us feel like she owned the room. How many times have you faked it until you made it? I know I am doing it daily.

What’s the NW Method?

I have noticed that there has been an increase with cardio dance in the fitness world lately.  Fitness trainer, instructors, are realizing that people are more willing to dance their stress away then burpees, squats and other traditional forms of exercise.  The NW Method is a welcomed addition to this new phase in fitness.  Mix dance, isometric movements, yoga-style holds and poses and then welcome your inner 90’s Janet Jackson and I would say that is something kind of similar to the NW Method.  Nicole being a critical part of the entertainment world is showing us some great fun and entertaining workouts to build your endurance, strength, flexibility, and fuel your creative soul.  I loved it!!! The best part I left a puddle on the floor.  The next day I felt like I had done a killer leg workout at the gym and I hadn’t lifted a weight, band or anything.  Just my bodyweight, reps and I achieved the same effects as if I had worked in the gym.

Sweat, Refuel, Repeat

It’s the Pure Protein way and something this FaithFueled Mom lives by.  Pure Protein was a fantastic host, and I am partially biased because they spoiled me with yummy protein treats that night. MM MM! Also, we were introduced to their new line of Protein Plus bars that have increased fiber in them.  Gluten-free and GMO-free so this mommy gave them a try.  Now, for my dairy free peeps I took a hit, they do contain whey and milk proteins so they may not be for you but their Protein Bites!  The bars had little effect on me but they shake unfortunately was not a good idea.  What I love about the Pure Protein bars is that they are low in sugar 2-3g per bar and junk free protein bars.  I am all about trying to fuel my body with natural or “clean” sources.

Can’t wait to do it again!

The workout was different because Nicole is different!  It’s those teachers who want to help other people to succeed and achieve their goals that make the difference. It makes you work so hard you leave a puddle of sweat on the floor. They make you want to do it again and try harder next time.  Those people who believe in you and that you are more than capable of what you think makes a great teacher and what I aspire to be in my classes.

nw-methodwith-pure-protein

All in all, it was such a fun experience. I plan on going back to New York in a few weeks to catch an NW Method Saturday class. It was that fun. I’ve never had an hour workout go by so quickly and although I did grimace a few times. I can’t wait to do it again. I have added lots of cardio to my life lately, and I think I wouldn’t hate it so much if it were dance. The NW Method achieves all that I need in a workout and powered by Pure Protein it’s just the mix I need to keep me motivated and inspired.

Do you like to dance? What’s your favorite type of cardio dance workout?

Old Habits Never Die

journey

We can change a old habit but it will never die. The definition of change is to become something different. I had a love-hate relationship with fitness. When I first met my husband, my husband (not at the time but soon to be) was a personal trainer and I was one of those very skinny fat people. A good metabolism and no children made a body good but I was very unhealthy. I ate so many bad things, I smoked (secretly from my then boyfriend who hated it), I drank socially, I hated working out but my husband inspired me to change some of my ways-smoking, physical inactivity. It was great! I began forming new habits I began to change and become something different. Just like any journey we take we start off somewhere and we end up somewhere completely different. But just because we are in that new place doesn’t erase where we came from. Habits are just like that, never dying always there but new ones can be formed that are better for you and what you want to continue.

What do we know?

I am sure you have heard that it takes 21 days to create a habit. Why is that? A habit is basically a pattern of behavior that gets “worn into our brain.” Everything we do (and think, for that matter) is governed by impulses firing across synapses, or spaces between certain cells that guide communication.

That is why sometime when you are driving home from work and you can seem on autopilot. For instance, say you add something to your schedule such as “pick up milk before I get home.” You mentally remind yourself before you leave your office yet, you drive straight home only to open the refrigerator and realize; “I forgot to pick up the milk before I came home.” We have all done something like that because we are in the habit of doing certain task one way and when we add something different we have to make a conscious effort to change that habit.

When any behavior or pattern is repeated enough, the synaptic pathways associated with that pattern get used to being accessed. As a result, it becomes easier for impulses to travel along those pathways, and the behavior seems “natural.” In other words, to the brain, drive straight home, is practically instinctive. One action triggers the next.

I am sure that you have tried other programs and they have told you “In three weeks this will become second nature” and you have been skeptical, first how can you make a drastic change in your life so quickly and second, how are you going to be able to stay on track for 3 weeks or 21 days. It is possible but it all depends on “how bad do you want it?”

So, is this kind of making sense to you? Let me give you some scientific background of how and why  you need more than three weeks to create a lifetime habit?

autopilot

What don’t we know?

The pattern-enforcing synaptic pathways are able to be programmed.  There is no real known origin of the 21 day rule, there is a book called “Psycho-Cybernetics” by Maxwell Maltz, which was a self-help book that was published in the 1970s reprinted in 1989. Psycho-Cybernetics, stated that it takes 21 days to create or break a habit. The evidence gathered from that book was based on practical experiences and not clinical experiences. It has been used in a most programs since then. It has been proven that most people can adapt or change a bad habit in 21 days but as far as brain waves, and any other research to back up the claim there is no known origin.

We all know that is easier to pick up a habit then it is to break a habit. Especially, if you enjoy it or it relieves some form of stress or anxiety such as nail biting, smoking, over eating, etc. If you repeat a behavior often enough your synaptic pathways are going to become programmed. The human brain is an adaptive organ and adapts to its surroundings very easily.  Does it actually take 21 days, who knows, sometimes it takes 15 days others it take 25 days but generally speaking by the 21st day a habit becomes second nature. Everyone is different and every brain is different but a key to habit formation is dependent on the experience and the personality of the individual. If it goes against the grain it might take longer for you to adapt hence why you may “fall off the wagon.” It’s not because you didn’t program your brain you are not enjoying the experience which is why when trying to break a habit you need to find something that is pleasurable to you to replace it and allow new  synaptic pathways to form.

Breaking a habit is a lot more complicated, because while parts of those worn-in pathways can weaken without use, they never go away [source: Rae-Dupree]. They can be reactivated with the slightest provocation [source: Delude]. If you’ve ever tried to quit smoking, you already know this. You can go a year without a cigarette, and then give in one time and BANG, the habit comes right back.

The best you can do, then, is to form a new, parallel pattern, like exercising when you feel stress, rather than indulge the old pattern, which triggers “cigarette” in response to stress. I also find that praying is comforting and stress relieving and as I reflecting in my Honor Your Temple Prayer Challenge is an optimal solution to help you break a bad habit.  This is also, why “falling off the wagon” becomes so easy. You have already programmed yourself and unfortunately creating new and better habits is not a reset button it is more of a pause button on those habit that you no longer desire but don’t know how to break and re-record.

Let’s be real it is really going to probably take 60 days to truly break a habit. 21-30 days (Take into account personality differences) to change the habit and then another 30 days to reinforce that change and create a strong synaptic pathway that will be sustaining.

When I used to work in professional organizing I would work with my clients for a minimum of 60 days. I created a new habit timeline for them to follow that may help you form a new and better habit this year too.

Habittimeline

Week 5-8: Find an accountability partner, group, etc. someone to check in with weekly and tell you them of the success you have made. It’s easier to be held accountable once you have already made the change versus while you are trying to change. It is less discouraging if you have change or setbacks. Also, this is a personal change and you can’t let outside influences effect inside transformations. Continue this transformation. Continue to keep track and expand on it if possible. Sign up for cooking courses, 5k’s, competitions, or something to practice your new change with. Reward yourself at the end of each week with something of value to you. By Week 8 you should have two habits; one is the habit you’ve wished to transform; the other is a new habit. Once you achieve that keep in mind that “Old habits don’t die!”

Changing My Story

Honor Your Temple

Finding a better way

Behind every picture is a story; We all know that and looking at the last few years of my life pictures I definitely have one to tell.  August 1, I woke up and decided that I had enough with my current health. I was eating well enough, but I still was over indulging on sugar, my portions were ridiculous and using my boredom as an excuse to nibble on snacks.  I didn’t feel content in the body I was in, it didn’t match the image in my head. So, I decided to do something. I posted about how I found Beyond Fit Mom, and how I was making changes in my life. Well here I am 60 days later and I have totally created a new lifetime habit. I wanted to blog about this because there are a lot of mom’s who have shown the before and after but not a lot that shows the during. Its hard to relate to someone who has already found the results that you seek. I am here (at least for now) everyday doing the work to get the body that I will help me live a healthy lifestyle.

Total Weight Loss So far

Before, I had my third daughter I was visually in good shape but I had horrible eating habits. I also worked out several hours a day, which was great when you have two school age children but when you have a new baby its not that simple. BFM, was essential in my life because it allowed my workouts to be efficient. I was  about 60 pounds overweight and I have a goal to lose it by Christmas. I am very goal driven and it was the only way that I was going to get my life back in order. So, the first 30 days I did the workout followed the nutrition and lost a little less than 14 pounds, my husband was a great motivator and accountability partner. The second 30 days, my husband who is a school teacher and wouldn’t be there to cheer me on so after prayer, I had the God idea to Honor My Temple through a prayer challenge. I partnered with a Fitness Specialist and together we prayed and through social media involved others to help us honor our temple through prayer. It was life changing for me. When I went to God with my issues not only was I stronger and achieved more I grew my relationship in Christ too.

30 Day Isagenix Cleanse

Cleansing my temple

Another, life changing experience I had this month was a 30 day cleanse. I have never cleansed before and after speaking with my friend I was convinced that a 30 day cleanse would be a great way to jump start this change in eating and exercising. I totally thought I was ready, I was not ready at all. The first two weeks, I had a wedding and 2 birthday parties to attend which I was pretty strong willed and did very well I didn’t eat any of the no no foods and only drank water the entire time. Now, I would like to say this was my own strong will but in all actuality it was through prayer that I was able to achieve this feat. Now, the last two weeks were probably the hardest. I was over this restricted lifestyle change, I was ready to indulge, fall is here and all the smells and food were enticing me to quit. It was only through my strength in the Lord that I was able to continue and not submit to temptation. It seems cheeky but I really did pray my way through and I had amazing results.

How did I get here?

In 18 days I lost 6 pounds and 24.75 inches all over my body.  I lost all of this through eating correctly, working out 3 days a week and daily prayer. I want to emphasize there were no wraps, no magic pills, I ate non processed protein and produced and sweated three days a week for 20-30 minutes each day without fail. Even when I weighed 128 pound I did not feel this good. I have so much energy, my memory has improved, I just feel so much better about myself. The best part through this entire journey is that my faith and trust in God has multiplied and I am now living a completely aligned life. I have always sought balance and now I have achieved it and will probably continue down this road for a lifetime.

What have you done in your life to change your story?

My journey so far and still have 40 pounds to lose, please check back with me next month or follow my blog to see my continued progress.

Lost in Pursuit

roadlesstraveled

Matthew 7:13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy[a] that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.

Pursuing Popularity

My life has changed so much in the years that I have found Jesus.  I used to live my life as a popularity contest.  Who could I please, impress so that I could be a part of the crowd, a crowd? What could I say or do to gain their acceptance? It was how I lived my life.  Then I found Jesus and it wasn’t an immediate change it was a slow transition that picked up momentum as I grew in Christ.   Some people have the “come to Jesus moment” its and immediate change and I have witnessed it, I am just not one of those people.  The more I grew in my relationship with Jesus, the less I needed to be accepted by people and crowds.

John 15:5-8 (ESV) 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.

Limiting myself through misconceptions

I thought being a follower of Jesus would result in restrictions and confinement to live under rules and regulations.  If only I would have done my research and realize there is freedom in Jesus.  Living in the world we are bound by rules; social, moral, ethical, political, society and governing rules. Living in Jesus we are bound by love, unconditional love.

Galatians 3:23-25 (NIV) 23 Before the coming of this faith,we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. 24 So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. 25 Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.

Just like my quest to be popular and I wanted to do, say, and act a certain way. The same can be said for my quest for the kingdom. I still want to do, say and act a certain way but it’s not because of rules, it’s because of a change of heart.  There is a switch when you choose to follow and accept Jesus as your Savior.  I always thought people were romanticizing the idea but now that I follow, I realize its not all that I had made it up to be, it’s so much better.

Lost Among People

Unconditional Acceptance

God really does change you for the good. One of the best part is that God changes you no matter where you are, what your past was or how you got here.  He can change stubborn 80 year old man, a rebellious 19 year old young adult, or a now humbled 30 something year old women who has ran from God for years (me).  It can be like a light switch off and on or can be a gradual appreciation and acceptance.  It’s never to late and no one is excluded. Unlike people, God takes you for who you are.  Flaws welcomed; foul mouths, step on up; addicts, He has something for you too; those seeking acceptance, you have come to the right place! He loves us unconditionally, although we were made in His image there is nothing like the original, God.  The biggest fear I had about being too “religious” was guilt, judgement and condemnation of people in the Church. My concerns were misplaced and not about God but was still people pleasing and how those in the Church would accept me.  The very same people who are flawed enough to judge and condemn someone trying to enter his kingdom, even though they walked and lived in sin daily themselves was the ones I was concerned about.

Galatians 1:10 (ESV) For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Pursue God

Don’t let people ruin it for God

I feel like people sometimes ruin it for God. They make it harder for those who are new to get to Him. I think that is why televangelist are so popular and accepted. You don’t have to go through the trials of the people of the world to receive a message. You can turn on your television, podcast and over streams of media and received the message directly. If you are new to Christ and you are struggling sometime people of the Church can make it intimidating by being judgmental or unwelcoming. We have to overcome this and just go to the source, God, that’s where you will find the unconditional love and total fulfillment. You will never be fulfilled by people they will always let you down. I still pursue acceptance and still want to join the crowd but it’s a different crowd that is made up of only three.  I am living and pursuing the acceptance on the Son, Father and Holy Spirit and in return it is make me whole, builds me up and completely satisfies all my needs. Have you ever sought popularity? How is God helping you overcome your pursuits of the wrong things?

If Gathering

sponsored disclosure

If: Gathering

As a mom, I don’t get the opportunity to dress up like I used to.  Typically, leggings and a long shirt, sometimes I may even do my hair and makeup.  My church isn’t the dress up kind of church, so I will typically wear something nice but I don’t get to get “fancy”. When I go invited to the IF: Table I was excited for multiple reason, one being the women fellowship and another I would be able to break out some “fancy” duds ( not necessarily fancy but get a little dressed up).

Dressing for your body, today

Grace Boutique with Premier Jewelry

Going through my closet was discouraging, I am still at that awkward stage of postpartum.  Too small and so tired of maternity and not small enough for my former size 6 wardrobe (although I am working diligently to get back).  I don’t want to buy clothes in this size.  I am grateful to have found Grace Boutique beautiful, unique, mommy friendly boutique.  I went in there and they had exactly what I needed. One shirt/dress that can be worn six different ways and the best part yet, it covers my mommy tummy and curves.  Paired it with my Girl’s best friend necklace that can be worn 30 different ways and I have 36 different outfits with two pieces.  The best part is that both companies make being a modest Christian women stylish and classy.  Just what I need until I can fit back in my wardrobe again.

Need to fellowship

if table

I also needed the fellowship with the women that the If:table gathering brought me, what an amazing experience.  It’s an amazing ministry bringing women together like in the old church to talk about their lessons with God.  The night was amazing we all brought a side dish and out hostess made a delicious pasta meal.  I loved that we all garden and brought fresh side dishes, grown and picked by us,  I left the meal soul filled and stuffed. The guest including myself was from all walks of life.  New moms, multiple children mother, mom of teenagers, and a widow.  The different perspectives, ages and experiences made for a great in depth night.

We were given four thought provoking questions.  Some of the ladies answers really made me think about my own relationship with Christ.  I was so blessed from the experience and I am hosting my own If:table this month.  I can’t wait to share with a different group of women this experience and learn from a new group of women to grow from. With my two pieces from Grace Boutique and SamBling I also don’t have to worry about an outfit. Is there something you do to fellowship with different women or the same thing every month?
