Excited for 2018 Fitness Fest at the FitExpo Philadelphia
It finally springs ya’ll, no really it is, and I cannot wait. I thrive in warmer weather although, I don’t complain about the cold. I kind of like every season for one reason or another and I am glad the seasons are short-lived throughout our year. So, I am ready for longer days, warmer weather and digging in the dirt with my garden.
I also am filling my calendar because the cold weather I tend to hibernate. in the spring and summer it’s gone time and I already have some fun things in mind this year. Last year, my spring was all about prepping and because of my ankle injury and also my pockets. I am not competing this summer as I planned.
Since I have been literally had been off my feet for 12 weeks, I am looking for fun events to get moving. I cannot think of anything that fits my need to get out, try new things and hang with people who like to honor their temple than FitnessFest at the Fit Expo Philadelphia.
What is the Fitness Fest Expo?
Fitness Fest at the FitExpo is an expo that goes all over the country introducing fitness workouts, equipment and educating personal trainers, group fitness leaders, aquatic instructors, mind/body practitioners and healthcare professionals. This jam-packed weekend allows professionals in the field to earn continuing education credits in a single weekend with some of the top presenters in the industry!
If you’re not a fitness professional, but you are a fitness enthusiasts you are more than welcomed to attend the conferences. There are going to be some incredible workshops you can shop at the expo and check out the latest in fitness equipment and trends. Also, come and participate in the FitnessFest Obstacle Course. It’s going to be a really fun weekend, April 27-28 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
Hourly there is something fun, and I can’t wait to check out some of my favorite workouts! Like B.R.Y.C.K.E.D is a can’t miss! I am (kind of) a Tru Adams groupie and wherever I see B.R.Y.C.K.E.D offered I’m there!
What will you get out of Fitness Fest this year?
It’s also an excellent opportunity to meet another professional in your field or similar. You also know at expo’s there are lots of vendors. When it comes to fitness sometimes, you need to touch and feel to see if it’s worth it. I know that I would never have made some of my fitness purchase like footwear or clothes. I am eager to see what some vendors like 360 degrees have in footwear or Strong Board balance among so many other types of equipment and workouts. You know the things you see on Social media and want to see in real life first? Expo’s are great for that too.
How can you join me?
This year is a great lineup you can see the details on Fitness Fest Site. I already told you about my girl Tru who will be there but did you see that also I would love for you to join me as I explore the Pennsylvania Convention Center April 28-29th and get my sweat, shop, and fun on at FitnessFest Expo Philadelphia. If you don’t get B.R.Y.C.K.E.D. up with me, then I will probably see you by the Bodybuilding.com table which is one of the sponsors of the event. Wherever it may be, I hope to see you there on April 28th or 29th.
For all of my followers, FitnessFest at The FitExpo Philadelphia has given me a discount code for $30 off your tick just enter “FAITHFUELED” in the promo code to receive your discount. Let me know your coming so we can meetup! Can’t wait I hope to see you there!
When I first started my weight loss journey I was introduced to protein shakes. I wasn’t aware of all the options and drank what was recommended. After about a month I knew I had to try something different but didn’t know what to choose out of all of the many. A year later I have not only a great understanding of the value of protein powders in your diet. I have some recommendations. Protein powders are a great addition to your diet because:
• They are a convenient, high-protein, take anywhere food similar to meats, fish, eggs and dairy but can nonperishable in the powder form.
• They are a great healthy fat containing very little fat and are usually cholesterol free which is hard to find in a high-protein food
• They can be used for the entire family
• A bonus to all of these other benefits it can taste great too and be a treat after a hard sweat session.
You can find hundreds of protein powders on the market in the United States. They range from poor quality and ingredients to an excellent source of nutrients every day. There are two types of protein and then subcategories: I feel like you need to try a variety of protein powders to see which one you prefer especially after testing out a few this summer. My biggest concern when choosing a protein powder was quality and food allergies. My food allergies lead me to plant based protein. I am allergic to wheat and lactose intolerant. There are other types of proteins such as whey and casein, egg and soy, but I am going to talk specifically about plant-based protein.
What do I look for in a Protein? For the best protein for me I took a few qualities into consideration:
1. Ingredients are important-all that Sucralose, Dextrose nonsense is no good; Artificial or artificial/natural flavors I stay away from; the only option I have is natural flavors and sweeteners.2. Cost of protein- I can’t afford to spend hundreds of dollars a month on supplements it needs to be below $80 per month. Nor do I find that a wise way to spend your money. Protein can range in prices. The protein that I regularly use is $35 with shipping for 30 days of protein. I usually buy one for baking and one for drinking.
3. Additives-does it have additional ingredients that enhance the protein powder kinda of like a 2 for one which can be a bonus! I personally like that No Udder Protein has L-Glutamine for Athletic Performance and Recovery.
Why plant-based protein? Animal protein is more popular than plant based protein for a various reason mainly taste and nutrition. Most people use whey protein it is probably the most famous protein powder. Most people think that plant-based protein users are vegetarians and vegans, but that’s not always the case. I decided to go to a plant based protein due to the discovery of food allergies and intolerance. Plant based protein has provided me the protein I need with no food allergy reactions, but I love meat too. It’s been a long journey through grit, but I have found a few plant-based proteins that provide quality ingredients-meaning junk free protein, affordable price, great tasting and some have additives that provide even more convenience. How does it taste?Taste is a big factor for me when choosing a protein if I can’t enjoy I can’t eat it or drink it. Although, I won’t sacrifice honoring my temple for artificial sweeteners to sweeten my protein. There are artificial sweeteners that are approved by the FDA, it doesn’t mean it’s the best thing to put in your body. It makes no sense to me to workout hard, eat right and then sip on a Protein powder that has artificial chemicals. It seems counter-intuitive to all of your efforts. I love the way Healthy Skoop taste and smells my middle daughter does too.
Is protein expensive? My family is reviving our financial health and stick to an adhere to a strict budget. I am not able to have a large supplement budget, so cost is a factor. This all is dependent on you but the lower the quality, the lower the price. Don’t use your stomach like a waste basket and drink junk. Enhancements and meal replacements It’s common to find proteins enhanced with BCAAs, arginine, amino acids, glutamine, some are meal replacements with added carbs; not to get confused with protein shakes as they often are with direct sales shakes. Protein shakes are not meal replacement they are additional high-quality protein, amino acids to give you additional nutritional support.
My Top ChoicesHealthy Skoop as my most favorite to bake with it didn’t change the taste of any of my baked goods it only enhanced and it smells amazing. It’s also my top choice because it gives back to American Schools fresh produce through their program Project Produce 3% of their sales.
No Udder Protein
Next on my RoundUp is NoUdder than No Udder Protein. This is my second pick only because it doesn’t make pancakes well. I am completely honest; protein pancakes that important to me. I look forward to them when I plan them on the menu. This protein gave me the best pre and post workout feeling. Even on leg days, my recovery was minimal, and I am going to attribute that to this protein shake. It’s also has a mild flavor, so it is excellent in shakes it doesn’t overpower the flavor.Vega Essential ShakeVega came in at number three it is a great shake too. It is a great addition to the essential ingredients that you need on a daily intake. It tastes good too and is not gritty. It makes great shakes and baked goods and delicious pancakes. It was hard to decide, but I will be using all three regularly. I also want to try other Vega products as they have a lot of different specialized protein, and I would be interested to see how they work out. I felt weird not leaving a recipe for mealtime Monday. You have to try this Basil Lemonade it is delicious and refreshing just what you need after a hard workout out. I’m obsessed with Basil Lemonade and since I have way too much Basil (Sweet and Purple) in my garden I am drinking it up! Basil has some nutritional benefits:
🍋🍃. Reduces Inflammation
🍋🍃.Anti-Aging Properties
🍋🍃.Rich in Antioxidants
Let me know what kind of protein you use? Whey?Egg? Plant Based? None?
Last week, I went to a magical place, far far away called Los Angeles, and I entered into the world known as IDEA. It was such an amazing experience, and I was blessed to been able to attend it. I went to the IdeaWorld BlogFest Convention welcomed with open arms. I got to hang, learn and be around my people. Over 14,000 Fitness Professionals from 54 Countries attended and the entire week was buzzing with health, nutrition, fitness and wellness. It was everything that I expected!
Exactly what I didn’t expect
I expected to be educated about blogging. Suspected that I would meet a few women that I connected with and were nice. Intended on eating every day I was there. Knew I was going to workout before I attended that’s a given at a fitness convention. I was positive there would be vendors with fitness equipment, exercises, etc. I’ve been to a few expo’s I know how that part goes. I knew all these things were going to happen but to the caliber that they were executed; I didn’t know that.
The Workshops
Each workshop had such great information, you didn’t want to get up to use the restroom because you might miss something. I did have to leave once so I audio recorded the session because I didn’t want to miss a thing. With all the water we received, lets just say we were well hydrated the entire time. The first day was full of workshops do’s and don’ts; tips and tricks, quick valuable, actionable information overload tweet breaks. The tweet breaks were great, it was direct information from the Brands that we love. They told us specifically what they are looking for, who do they hire and teaching us great information in a 20 minute session. That was awesome to hear news from The Bells Institute, Generals Mills, Siggi’s, GymGo,Vital Proteins and Melissa Hartwig co-author of the Whole 30.
Blogging Tips
The blogging information was just what this newbie needed. I’ve been blogging since May 2015, and its been advice, some good, some bad, trial and error but I think I am finally getting the hang of things. I have attended events in Philadelphia and New York but the amount of immediately actionable information that I received was right on time. If someone who is already doing what I am doing and successful at it tells me to do A+B; I’ll take their word and do what they advise. There is no need to reinvent the wheel. So, I went to Los Angeles ready to be a sponge and soak up everything I could.
Learning from our Peers and Pitches
We also had blog reviews from our peers, which was great to have a completely non-bias eye on the blog. I met other beginner(s), seasoned veterans and some women who have taken their blog, personal training and business to a level I aspire to be. The feedback which I received from others in our industry was invaluable. Everyone was so kind, so honest and helpful, it was a great experience. On the second day, we had the opportunity to pitch to major corporations. I believe I presented myself well but a barrier that I often face is my “in your face” Christianity, which I am not going to change and if Corporations can’t work with me because of my beliefs I’m okay with that. Either way, whatever the outcome it was a great opportunity to practice. The opportunity to network was welcomed & necessary to everyone participating.
John 15:19 does say, If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
Staying Well Fed
The fact that I didn’t have to worry about feeding myself and there were options for my dietary needs that I didn’t have to think about, my food was a nice change of pace. It was like having my meal planned and prepped for me; It was wonderful! Breakfast was with General Mills on the first day and Silk on the second. Lunch was from Pure Protein and Morning Star. Each meal session gave valuable information about our sponsors and what they’ll be up to in the next few months. It was nice to get the inside scoop and information.
Our meals were of a great variety and using the sponsors products, some, I will be adding to my meal plan at home. Silk was represented by The Blender Girl she made an amazing Strawberry Red Bell Pepper Smoothie at their booth that I am going to make for my family without telling them the ingredients (hubby may know, he reads my blogs). It was delicious and I never knew that would be a tasty flavor combination. I have so many new recipes to try and you know me, I love a good kitchen experiment. So stay tuned for more of those hitting my “Mealtime Monday’s.”
Bands Matter with Gunnar Peterson
I was at Idea World Blogfest and World Convention for three days & worked out three times. I could have done more but being a newbie I didn’t plan my schedule accordingly. Although, I don’t think my body could have handled much more; next year I should be in even better shape and will try to challenge myself. I was pretty spent on Saturday. The fitness aspect of IdeaWorld Blogfest didn’t happen until the second day. I do wish that they would have had a yoga session Thursday morning or something to have us moving. By the time it was Friday, I was ready to workout with Gunnar Peterson. The workout was great with resistance bands/high-intensity exercises. If you check out the video, you can see the struggle and a glimpse at our workout.
Experiencing the Todd Durkin Experience
Saturday, I arrived at Idea World Convention early to attend the Todd Durkin Bootcamp. That experience had me in tears, I didn’t realize what this last year has done to and for me. Brought me out of depression, motivated me to get up, be active, healthy and inspire others. Todd’s words of encouragement to all of us had me teary eyed with pride. I was praying to God not to let me embarrass myself by vomiting everywhere half way through a circuit. I did it though, got through it, didn’t vomit and had the sweat to prove that my fat was bawling and the workout was great. It was a great way to end the most intense workouts that I have done in awhile; the Bootcamp brought me back to my first days working out where it took prayer, willpower and determination to get it done. Here I am, 50lbs lighter and more determined than ever to reach my goal and destination! It was a Mind, Body and Spiritual experience, something that I aspire to give to my clients one day. After the intense training with Todd, I attended a Workshop by Scott Rawcliff, Metabolic Mayhem, which fascinates me. Saturday was a fantastic way to end my trip learning from the best in the business.
Two Amazing Women
There were two speakers at the Idea World Convention that motivated and inspired and made me want to go after my dreams. Each of their stories were very different ones, they choose to move on to something new and exciting. One of the speakers was forced to move on to something new and stimulating; the other chose to move on to something new. I am talking about Jenna Wolfe, who formerly was a Health and Lifestyle Reporter for the Today Show and Amy Van Dyken-Rouen the six-time Olympic Gold Swimmer. Although, each of their stories were different, their messages were the same! You can achieve anything and everything but tomorrow is not promised. So we must take advantage of today and make it count to the best of our abilities. I video’d each speech and have been listening to them on Audio for motivation. Everyday human beings can do extraordinary things and these two speakers, expressed that wholeheartedly.
My Biggest Takeaway
The takeaway that I had was that fitness is not age, color, race, ethnicity, size or gender. Fitness is a mindset! Want to uplift your body and be the best? Adapt that mindset. My experience at Idea World Convention was memorable. It was my first time but next year I will be attending as a Personal Trainer and the world of opportunity will be greater and brighter. I want to thank Fit Approach Sweat Pink for making me feel welcomed and organizing a great event for bloggers. I came home motivated to take this blog to another level. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to attend. Next year, I hope/aspire to be even closer to my goals and fine tuning my blog. For now, I am going to take what I have learned, apply it and improve upon it every day. I have no idea how but I am praying God will lead my steps.
