7 Benefits of Cherries

There are so many benefits to Cherries. Add cherries to your shake for a super boost before or after a workout.

There are affiliate links in this post. I am a NOW Influencer and in partnership with #NOWWellness. I am compensated for my content. My opinions expressed are my own.  My Full Disclosure Policy

Living in New Jersey

One of the things I love about summer is the fruit. Cherries are a favorite summertime fruit because they’re so juicy, ripe, and I can get them locally rather than buying them in the store.

Grateful to live in the Garden State and an ideal location. We are 20 minutes from a lake, 10 minutes from a farm, 45 minutes from the Jersey Shore, and 10 minutes from Philadelphia in a great little suburb town in South Jersey. If I was into the mountains, which as of now, I am not a hiking kind of girl, I could be in the Poconos or Upstate New York in about 2 hours.

Buy Local Produce

Buying local is easy where I live; that is why I try to buy my produce locally. I instead support our local farmers and, over the years, have made some great relationships.

When Debbie, the owner of Hess Brown Farm in Moorestown, NJ, told me they got cherries in, I went overboard. Cherries are high in sugar, but they have other benefits that I tend to overlook their high sugar content.  I usually consume two protein shakes a day. One, after a workout and the other as my late afternoon snack.

Usually, the second one is full of greens, and the first is my yummy treat I give myself for sweating it out that morning. Cherry Almond, anything is so yum, so I experimented with my shake and had a great surprise.

Watch your Protein

There are lots of protein powders on the market. Whey, Egg White, Soy, and Plant-Based, just to name a few. I will have done multiple posts on why I choose plant-based protein over the other options.

Plant-based protein is easier on my digestive system. The problem with plant-based protein is it can be very grainy and sometimes just gross. Similar to other proteins. Also, for protein powders, they can be loaded up with junk. Sucralose is the main thing I stay away from because it has a link to some awful side effects.

I don’t understand how health and fitness “experts” can tell you how to work out and exercise and then recommend shakes with gross ingredients that are harmful to your insides.  The plant-based protein that, after much research, I love is NOW® Sports; it is my favorite. It’s not gritty; it’s very creamy; there’s no junk, and it works well when you bake.

7 Benefits of Cherry Juice – These are my personal views and not those of NOW

1.Better Sleep.

A 2010 study concluded that tart cherry juice had resembled effects as insomnia medications like valerian or melatonin on older adults. In the study, those who consumed tart cherry juice had more regular and improved sleep patterns.

2.Fight Inflammation

Cherries are have increased amounts of antioxidants, which have been shown to help reduce inflammation in the body.  The antioxidants that are found in tart cherry choice are highly concentrated anthocyanin, flavonoids that are known to have the same effects as ibuprofen and naproxen.

3. Reduce Muscle Pain

Multiple factors cause cherries to reduce muscle pain, and they are already explained in other benefits: antioxidant content, anti-inflammatory properties, and naturally occurring in nature.  Those who consume tart cherry juice before and after intense training can reduce muscle pain similarly to chemically produced supplements without any health-damaging side-effects.

4. Reduce joint pain

Those who suffer from joint pain has felt relief and reduction through drinking tart cherry juice. Cherry juice has been shown to mimic the arthritis medication in its ability to relieve joint pain without the side effects of these pharmaceutical drugs. Without joint pain, it allows you to live a happier and more productive life in and out of the gym.

5.Helps your body conduct electrical current better

Cherry Juice contains a lot of potassium, which is supportive in allowing electrical impulses to flow throughout the body more efficiently. Cherries have high trace minerals that help maintain blood pressure, hydration, muscle recovery, nerve impulses, digestion, heart rate, and pH balance. This makes cherries an excellent post-workout fuel.

6. Increase Immunity

Cherries contain the micronutrients needed in high concentrations to fight off illness. Most fruits and vegetables contain micronutrients that our bodies need to perform better and fight infections.  Cherries individually are highly concentrated in antioxidants called  Flavonoids. Most plants contain these antioxidants to fight germs. There has been researching concluding that digesting these chemicals found in cherries can have a positive impact on boost our immune system function.

7. Effects of cancer cells

Researchers studied pitted cherry juice and compared it to a treatment called, which is used to treat cancerous colon tumors in animals.  The study resulted in reduced growth of cancer cells with animals who consumed cherry juice regularly.

My pre- and post-workout with beet and cherry juice mix that I am still working on a recipe.   You should be adding cherries to your diet. It is a natural way to improve your health, fight infections, enhance your quality of sleep, and enhance your immune system. It also tastes good too! This recipe you can use any protein powder, but just make sure you read your labels and learn about what you’re putting in your body. If you like Cherries as I do, you will love this. If you try it, let me know what you think. Are you a cherry fan? Why? Why not?

Self Care is Biblical

Today’s guest blogger is Michelle Hartgraves from Faith, Coffee and Miles.  She is amazing wife, mother and fitness enthusiast with a heart for God.  I am grateful for her contribution to FaithFueled Moms and her valued input on how we must take care of ourselves.  Check out her thoughts:

Imagine what happens when you neglect to give your home the necessary attention it needs,  soon it would be in total disarray, dishes piling up, mountains of laundry needing to be done, etc. Now think about what happens to your physical home (your body, your temple) when it is neglected or your attention is elsewhere; frustration, impatience, weight gain, health problems, spiritual emptiness, and depression are all factors that come into play.

Strengthening our bodies to nurture ourselves physically

Proverbs 31:17  “She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.”

Physical activity is great stress relief. Physical activity also reduces our risks for and complications of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, Type 2 diabetes, and much more. When we work out, it sweats out our toxins, and helps us become stronger physically. Regular exercise strengthens our immune systems and can give us more energy to get our tasks done.

Proverbs 17:22 “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”

When we work out it raises our serotonin levels, which are feel good chemicals flooding your system. It can help us cope with stress, lowers our cortisol levels which can cause weight gain, and gets our mind off what is troubling us at the moment. As if there wasn’t enough stress in life, I have a preteen and a teen so running or working out is my sanity saver. It helps me refocus and re-evaluate. Did you know that when we exercise, we build muscle and stamina, but we also release a protein called BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) which also helps boost the feeling of happiness and effects memory. We feel not only physically stronger but mentally stronger. We have more energy to be in the moment and enjoy our kids, to enjoy daily life and feel better about ourselves.

Nurturing our minds and well-being

Mark 6:31 “And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while…”

The Bible speaks about rest several time, beginning with the creation week. The Ten Commandments made resting on the Sabbath a requirement of the Law. Even Jesus rested in his ministry. God desires rest for us because it does not come naturally to us.

Sleep/Rest  it plays a part with rebalancing hormone function. Sleep influences our body’s hormone response and insulin sensitivity and is necessary to heal and detox. It helps restore the Nervous system, manage stress, is good for our immune system and adrenal glands, and even lowers cortisol levels.  Some things you can do to improve sleep is to sleep in a completely dark room, follow a regular routine for meals and sleep, and include relaxing herbal teas in your nighttime routine. Try to limit starches at bed time and aim for at least 7 hours if you can, or allow yourself to take a nap if you need it. Most importantly of all, listen to your body.

There are several things you can do to give your mind a break. Make time for your self by going for a leisurely walk solo, read a book you have been meaning to read for a while, or fill the tub with Epsom salts or bubble bath. Do what makes you feel rested and rejuvenated. For the Christian, the ultimate rest is found in Christ. He invites all who are “weary and burdened” to come to Him and cast our cares on Him (Matthew 11:28; 1 Peter 5:7). It is only in Him that we can find complete rest—from the cares of the world, from the burdens that weigh us down. Journal or write down reassuring Bible verses to memorize or look back on during times of stress or when you feel discouraged.

You are just as important as all of the things and people you constantly give your energy, love, and time to.  Give yourself the gift of you – the gift of making self-care a priority, to take care of your overall well-being. After all, how much more of an impact can we make in other’s lives, in our home, and in the world for God if we have the stamina and energy to do it.  We can better take care of others if we take care of ourselves.

3 John 1:2 “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

Do you believe self care is important? Do you practice self care?

Food & Mood: Healing the Whole Person- Mind, Body, & Spirit

Recently, on Social Media, I have been open with my battle of anxiety and depression and how living a healthier lifestyle has helped me.  I reached out to a long-time friend Dr.Angela Clack to get her expert opinion on the effects of food and nutrition on mental health. I am honored that Dr. Clack would share it with my readers and me.  Some great info here so take notes:

It all starts with your mindset

Years ago, I lost 50lbs with fitness, nutrition, and accountability (a great nutritionist, professional accountability to hold my feet to the fire if I messed up), and I loved the results. However, because I made my goal a number on the scale and a clothing size instead of a commitment to a lifestyle change- the weight slowly crept back.

Well, I know where I went wrong, and I’m sharing my story as well as sharing insights from the therapist’s corner to inspire and educate others about the mind-body connection. As well as the impact food has on our mood-both scientifically (through research) and from my experience in working with hundreds of people who have struggled with both emotional health difficulties (depression and anxiety) and weight and body image issues.

Mental Health Disorder defined

To understand the complex nature of mental health disorders, the reader will need a clear definition of what clinical symptoms are typical for someone experiencing mental health/mental illness. The problem is that not all people experience the same symptoms. Men and women often differ in how their mental health problems manifest as well as across cultures. Women are twice as often as men to experience major depression. One fourth to one-sixth of childbearing age women are on an anti-depressant. For consistency and purposes of this article, I will provide a broad definition.

First, my definition of mental health disorder-is a disconnection between your emotional, physical, social, and spiritual self. In other words, you are disconnected from your thoughts, your sense of self and self-care (i.e., physical health), dis-connected from an adequate social support system (or you are connected to toxic one), and you are disconnected from your power source-our faith and belief system in Christ. Wow, that’s a lot of disconnection-no wonders, one would be depressed and anxious.

Clinically, depression is (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think, and how you act. Anxiety is a general term for several disorders that cause nervousness, fear, apprehension, and worrying. Millions of individuals suffer from both of these disorders annually and throughout their lifetime. Typical treatments for these disorders are medication and psychotherapy (counseling). But as a practicing psychotherapist who has witnessed and observed the benefits of exercise and nutrition in helping to heal mild to moderate forms of mental health disorders, I have changed my philosophy of treatment to a holistic approach: mind, body, and spirit.

Nutritional Psychiatry

There is a new field in science named nutritional psychiatry. This is the intersection in research between science and cognitive functioning. It examines the relationship between diet, brain function, and the risk of mental disorders. Additionally, it examines the potential socioeconomic and environmental challenges detracting from the traditional dietary patterns that might otherwise support positive mental health.

In March/April, Ed. 2016 of the Scientific American Mind the researchers noted the following scientific outcomes:

  • Research on anxiety,
  • depression,
  • and exercise shows

That the psychological and physical benefits of exercise can also help reduce stress and improve mood (Mayo Clinic). Besides lifting your mood, regular exercise offers other health benefits, such as:

  • lowering blood pressure,
  • protecting against heart disease and cancer,
  • and boosting self-esteem.

Nutritional Imbalances trigger depression

There are several nutritional imbalances that can make one prone to depression:

  • essential fats,
  • blood sugar balance,
  • food intolerances,
  • low-level Vitamin D,
  • high sugar intake,

Health researchers have found a link between inflammation and depression. Inflammation is caused by obesity, high sugar diets, high quantities of trans fats, unhealthy diets in general, and STRESS!!!!
When we are depressed, we are more likely to eat carbs and junk food, which over time, causes weight gain and inflammation.

Honor your body as it deserves

Imagine the following at age 16 years old. You get a new car. You are told that this car must last you your lifetime. Remember, you only get this one car for your lifetime! How would you treat it? Would you schedule maintenance services on-time and consistently? Would you check tires and replace them as needed? Would you put damaged or used parts into a new car? If you have a luxury car (foreign model), would you take it to the local shop on the corner? Or would you run it into the ground, hoping it will hold out? Not likely would we risk any of these scenarios. We would be mindful and careful to take off that car. Think of that car as your body. Because at birth, we only get one, and it’s designed to last a lifetime if we take care of it. What is your relationship with your body? What is your relationship with food?

According to the Dictionary, the definition of food- “is any nourishing substance that is eaten, drunk, or otherwise taken into the body to sustain life, provide energy, promote growth,” If we savored food like this definition, we would enjoy our food so much more and would make healthier food choices. Unfortunately, we live in a culture that is saturated with the marketing of high-fat foods and high sugar diets. We must be better informed.

Food Effect on our Mind and Bodies

Can I share research about what our foods are doing to our minds and bodies? This may not be favorable to many, but it’s the truth. Check the numbers of obese children and adults in the world. Check the names of individuals living on disability due to emotional and physical health conditions. We also know that about 50% of women who try psychiatric medications never get the benefit, and after a year of being on them, 60% show no improvement in their symptoms one year later.

mindandbody

Processed food linked to depression and anxiety

Here we go. Evidence links stereotypical Western diets, which are heavy in processed and fatty foods, to higher rates of depression and anxiety. Unhealthy diets most likely contribute to a range of neuropsychiatric disorders by increasing inflammation. Research indicates that traditional diets from the Mediterranean, Scandinavia, and Japan help to preserve our psychological and cognitive well-being. Those diets all include fish ( a great source of omega-3 fatty acids). The Mediterranean diet consists of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, lean meats, and olive oil. The main feature of this diet is that it is low in sugar and processed foods.

But there is hope! Let me offer some food for thought (no pun intended). If you keep the mindset that “knowing that what I eat can affect how I feel” will help you to see food as fuel and not necessarily as a restrictive diet. We are finding that there is compelling evidence that nutrition is as important to psychiatry as it is to cardiology, endocrinology, and gastroenterology. (March/April Ed. 2016 of the Scientific American Mind).

Of course, in addition to food choices, the elimination and reduction of toxic stress in your life, which often leads to emotional eating, needs to be kept in check. That’s where a support group, psychotherapy, or a nutritionist or health coach would be integral to your success in the battle of the mind.
Want to feel better? Want to live longer and with less stress on your mind and body? Want your skin to glow and look refreshed daily? Want to sleep better? Do you want overall better cognitive functioning without depression or anxiety? Think “brain-healthy “foods. Visualize the image at the top of the article when making food choices and see where food will make an impact on your brain and health.

Overall, research continues to support and show that the main ingredients for a healthy brain diet will consist of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, fish, lean meats and healthy fats such as olive oil (March/April Ed. 2016 of the Scientific American Mind).

Eat well. Live well. Live long. Be mindful; you only have one brain and one body.

5 Mistakes I Made at the Natural Products East Expo

I was given tickets to Natural Product Expo East in exchange for press coverage for the event. All my opinions are my own. My Full Disclosure Policy.

Natural Products Expo East

For the last three years, I have been told that I needed to attend Natural Products Expo West and East.  Every year I make in excuse but this year I finally did it all wrong.  I covered the Natural Expo East as a blogger. I have covered other events over the years. Attending very large expos like Idea World Convention and smaller expos like the Gluten-Free and Allergy Friendly expo which is now known as the Nourish Festival.  So I thought I knew what I was doing from what I have learned over the years.  Like go in with very little and bring a jacket.  Usually, that’s all I really need because I am in and out within a day.

Now, the same friends have shared the enormity of the expo but I still went in unprepared.  I was god smacked walking into the four floors Baltimore Convention Center of Vendors sharing Natural wellness goods, services, and products.  It was overwhelming from the beginning.  I marched in my super cute boots ready to take on the expo and make connections with the brands.  That was the first of many mistakes.

5 Mistakes I made at the Natural Products Expo East

1. Come Prepared and have a game plan

I allowed myself two days to tackle the entire event and that was not enough time. If I was better prepared it might have been more feasible but I was naive. If you plan on attending the Natural Products Expo East which will be hosted in the nearby metro area Philadelphia for 2020. Save the date.  I would make a game plan of the important vendors you want to connect with first.  You can easily get distracted and sidetracked with all of the options that are there I would make the list of the important brands and start there.

For me, I am an ambassador and affiliate for a few of the brands who attended.  Prior to my attendance, I had spoken with a few via email and we were supposed to connect at Expo East. Some of them I was unable to connect with because it was hard to find them and along the way, I got distracted by many distractions.  Next year, I will visit my friends first and then wander around.

2. Wear proper attire.

I work in a gym Mon-Thurs and rarely get to wear “real clothes” so when it was time to get dressed for the Natural Products Expo East. My plan was to look cute.  Completing my outfit with some leopard boots I got last year after the winter season. I have been dying to wear them but breaking in my new boots and the Natural Product Expo East was the wrong idea.  About Mid Day in my feet were tired, blistered and sore. Lesson learn, opt for comfy foot attire at a massive expo.

3. Give yourself time

I thought it would only take two days to check out the expo but there is a reason it is four days long.  I think it would have been a much more enjoyable experience if I didn’t feel rushed and could take my time.  When it comes to Philly I will make sure that I go at least three days and I will take my time with my game plan and comfortable shoes.  I won’t leave feeling so overwhelmed.

4. Use the resources

Natural Products Expo East was great about sending emails about the schedule daily as well as the Expo Booklet was informative.  At the beginning of my day, I utilized the maps but by the end, I had misplaced my book and was lost often. I get lost in a circle so next time I will keep my booklet available to me at all times.

5. Bring more business cards.

I usually don’t give out my business cards unless I make a really meaningful connection. They cost money and most people throw them away. I brought about 50 business cards without realizing how many companies that I was going to connect.  I handed out 47 business cards at the Expo.  There is the ability to scan your badge but my business cards are memorable.  Towards the end of the stack, I became stingy with my cards but if I had brought more I would not have worried about running out.

Learning from my Mistakes

Natural Products Expo East was so much more than I expected.  The people were amazing with their passion for their products, goods or service. It was well organized and it was a great opportunity for me to get from behind my computer and make connections.  I am so excited about the opportunities that have already started coming to my inbox and I can’t wait to attend next year better prepared and open for opportunity.

I got to experience so many amazing brands, products, and services.  It was great to actually touch, try and also hear the stories behind the product development. I have heard Natural Products Expo West is triple the size and passion.  One day I will get there but I don’t think it will be this year.  It’s also nice to know that there are people who have dietary issues, supplemental needs like me and there are companies that are serving them.  It’s almost taboo to be Natural so at the Natural Product Expo East, I found that I am not alone.  It was a great experience and I hope I learn from my mistakes for the next one.

Have you ever attended an expo? Are you interested in Natural Products?

7 Reasons Good Health begins with Foot Care

Everything starts from the Sole up! I feel like often in fitness we are focused on vain goals. We want to look good, bigger arms, defined back and legs. Not everyone thinks of fitness as helping you to function better. In that neglect to perform better, we often take our feet for granted until we injure ourselves or worse. Feet are the foundation of our body and the key to a healthy life.

Those who often walk, stand for long periods of time can tell you when their feet feel good they feel good and there are many reasons:

7 Reasons good Health begins with your feet

1. Sturdy Foundation

We need to have and maintain a sturdy foundation. The human body is amazing and until I started studying correctives, I didn’t even realize how we are adaptable. Our feet are typically smaller than the other parts of our body yet it contains;
42 muscles
26 bones
33 joints
50 ligaments and tendons
Which hold our entire body upright. Your little size 8 feet can withstand hundreds of pounds and has over 15,000 nerve endings from our toes to our heels.

Our feet are meant to withstand a lot similar to a foundation of a home. Have you ever had a crack in your foundation? If no, you are fortunate because a small crack in a foundation can completely shift your home, ruin your walls and compromise your roof. A foot injury can do the same.

Feet are meant to be taken care of, but we are usually focused on the vanity body parts rather than the function essential ones. We wear our shoes way too long, don’t stretch or massage them until they are in pain.

That is the first place we should begin when focusing on our health from the bottom up.

2. Foot Care equals optimal circulation

We sit too much, and that is causing the muscles in our feet not to get the activity they need so that they can have good blood circulation. Our shoes also inhibit blood flow and circulation. It is suggested that you should massage your feet daily for about 10 minutes. From a 10-minute foot massage, you can cause dramatic effects on your blood circulation. It’s also a great way to relax and unwind.

My little Mimi is excellent at massages and offers them freely. Although, she enjoys it her little four-year-old hands just don’t get the job done. I have been using Solehealers at the end of my day, and I cannot tell you how it has improved the tightness in my calf and it just feels right.

3. Helps you sleep better

If you don’t find you have time for a good foot rub take a few minutes before bed to indulge. Not only will it promote circulation while you sleep and relaxing you from a stressful day. Studies have shown Foot massages before bed has been associated with relieving headaches, migraines, neck pain, lower and upper back aches too  Relieving this body pains help you to get a more peaceful slumber and feel well rested when you awaken the next day.

4. Boost your Mood

Another study revealed that foot massages are linked to relieving people from depression and improving mood. This is due to the over 15,000 nerve endings that reside in your feet. There is reflexologist who can pinpoint certain pressure areas in your feet that will boost your mood. In patients with depression, it is recommended to massage your feet 2 to 3 times per day for about 10 minutes to help relieve depression symptoms.

SoleHealers are great portable, therapeutic foot massages that you can do right at your desk as I am now as I write this post. I noticed that while writing it helps keep me focused and attentive when I am massaging my feet on my Solehealers.

5. Healthier Feet

Massaging and stimulating your feet muscles also helps with ankle and heel pain which is a biggie in my house. Since my Level 3 Ankle Sprain and my husband rupturing his Achilles tendon, we have found the value in proper foot care. We both use the Solehealers to help strengthen our weak ankles. It’s also helped my husband with his foot swelling at the end of the day. I like to stand on my SoleHealers during my warmup to kind of invigorate my feet before I begin my ankle correctives. It’s nice how small and portable the SoleHealers are because they make it really convenient to take anywhere.

6. Helps with anxiety

At first, when I was researching I thought the last thing I want to do when I am anxious is to sit down and stay still for a foot massage. I gave it a try and guessed what it works!  High Anxiety has plagued me for eleven years. I have tried pharmaceutical relief, prayer, and other homeopathic aids. It wasn’t until I got my SoleHealers and was doing research on foot care that I decided to try them out. It was beneficial this month. September my anxiety was very high due to many triggers in my life.

One day while having racing, anxious thoughts I gave it a, “Why not?” I stood on the SoleHealers for about 5 minutes and with a little prayer and standing still on my healers the wave of anxiety went away. Now honestly I am not sure if it was prayer because that has helped me in the past but taking that moment just to stand still and massage my feet was very calming. Other than my experiment, studies have shown a positive correlation between foot massages and reducing anxiety.

7. It feels good

Having healthy feet feels good. It’s awful to walk around in pain, and your feet take a lot of weight on them. Practicing self-care feels good so if you don’t have magic handed Mimi or able to get regular foot massages. I would highly recommend SoleHealers. My mom loves them and uses hers daily. Great for everyone whether you have foot ailments or want to prevent foot ailments.

Solehealers are “Therapeutic relief for stressed out feet” They are helpful to relieve plantar fasciitis, bunions, hammer toes, stiff ankles, and feet. Reduce pain after a day of walking in high heels. All you do is stand on them positioning your feet differently and let the magic happen. So simple and so many benefits. They also have some videos for you to try the new exercise with or to use specifically for different foot ailments.
