7 Ways to Get Started Working Out

Phew! What a journey I am on something that I never thought I would be able to do but having a sliver of a vision and trusting in God has led me to a beautiful place where I get to inspire others to get up and do something. I remember wanting to lose weight, work out, be a runner, anything to get active but having some interpretation and not knowing where to begin.  I also HATED exercising, so it took a while for me to find my groove but once I did, I am so grateful for the abilities God has given me.  Not everyone is like me and wants to run it out in a gym.  When I first started, I loathed the idea of going to the gym, and now it’s a place that I have come to find peace and need to get away in my day. I didn’t wake up one day and become a gym rat or want to exercise. It took over two years of intentional, consistent effort and it is now something apart of my daily routine. I remember getting started, and so I have seven suggestions for how to make a “Working Out” apart of your daily routine.

1. Walk and Worship

When in doubt walk it out. My favorite thing to do is walk and worship. Whether I have a great playlist, amazing sermon, bible study, or just to walk in nature. Spending time strolling (not power walking) and being filled with teh Holy Spirit has produced some Hallelujah moments as well as great revelations.  Try to carve 30 minutes out of your day an enjoy the difference.

2. Play with your kids (or someone else’s)

Going to the park is a way I can entertain all my lil diva’s, spend time with them and get a little sweat session. From big to little everyone can get involved and will want to participate.  My oldest and I will do Hill Sprints while my other two play in the dirt or try to keep up.  Tag is my middle’s favorite game to play with me is a tag.  Tagging her is impossible, but the chase is a great workout because she is so fast. She also enjoys watching me fall all over the place trying to tag her.  Once in a while, I get a lucky break, but I always end up laughing my abs off and get a good little cardio burst from the stop and start of tag my middle has memories of her mom falling around the park like a fool and couldn’t catch her. Then Mimi, requires lifting, holding your arms up to make sure they don’t fall, pushing around the merry-go-round, and pulling or pushing the swing back and forth. Thirty minutes of playing with kids is a decent workout. Then you always have just monkeying around which is fun too, and your kids will love it. September was National Childhood Obesity Awareness month and getting outside as a family is a great way to start healthy foundations in children’s lives.

3. Workout at home

That’s how I started doing different things at home. Creating a routine daily to sweat for 30 minutes I would get up early do my devotions and then workout. Two years later it is still a habit.  Doing workouts at home is great because it is non-intimidating and convenient. It also leaves you no excuse.

4. Join an Online Fitness Community

If you don’t have the support group physically the Internet can be a blessing with help you stay accountable.  Do your research when you choose a program! There are some great programs that can give you a plan for a home or gym workout as well as accountability.  My Bible’s and Bootcamp members have seen lots of success through the fellowship and accountability of my online group training program.

5. Find a fun Group Exercise class

I’ve written about how this is my third major weight loss in the past.  When I lost 105lbs (before social media), I did it through participation in classes at my local YMCA. I’ve done miles and miles of spinning, hours of Zumba, boot camp and kickboxing. I even did this Triathalon class for six weeks it was really intense, but I found results. Recently, I was certified in Zumba, PKfit, and I teach a weekday group class that coves HIIT, Upper and Lowe body Resistance and Cardio Kickboxing.  The results I see in teh members who consistently attend classes and follow an adaptable nutrition plan are phenomenal.  I am really excited to start teaching Strong by Zumba™ in the next few months. I’ve put a lot of things on the back burner while I was finishing school, but I am really excited to become an instructor.  Strong by Zumba™ is a program that is picking up in popularity because of the difference it is from what we know as Zumba. There are no shimmies or grapevines. This workout is ” is a high-intensity interval training workout driven by the science of Synced Music Motivation.” It has more traditional fitness moves like squats, planks, pushups and yes, burpees which you will not find in a Zumba class.  You should find your local class, or if you are near me you can check me out in a month at Revolution 360 on Saturday’s soon!

6. Try something that scares you

This year I have been doing things that I wouldn’t have done a few years ago because of anxiety. Even though I was blocking myself, it didn’t stop me from being curious about a lot of things.  This year I have decided to try those things and stop thinking about them, so when opportunities have presented themselves, I have tried something new.  What I have learned is that trying something new may unlock a passion that leads you to want to do it on a regular basis and not only would you have started a workout you may enjoy and look forward to doing it; cool concept? Just because lifting weights is what other people do doesn’t mean that you might have better results and enjoy what you are doing by swimming or fencing or double dutch or pilates. There are so many different possibilities and a way to “workout” and exercise; it’s not a one size fits all.You deserve to live a healthy life, and it looks different on every one. Just as we are “uniquely and wonderfully made” so is how our temples are honored.

7. Pray

Pray for direction, pray for self-discipline, pray to crave the things that are good for your body. Pray for a desire to treat your temple the way it deserves to be treated.  In Bibles and Bootcamps, we lead you through 6 weeks of daily devotions and prayer to change your mindset and hear from “I HAVE to workout to I GET to workout;” and in doing so, you are honoring your temple. The mind is a powerful thing and making adults do what they don’t want is hard. That is the hardest part your mental mindset, but when your mental, spiritual and physical are working together you can full honor God and bring Him glory!

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1

Is getting started with a workout program a struggle? What makes it hard?

Married without the Wedding: #EdDeRound2

Although, I have been married for over 15 years one thing that I have always wanted was a Wedding photo. Why? I never got to have a wedding. My husband, Coach Eddie B and I met 19 years ago through a mutual friend. We became fast friends. Eddie B was married to his first wife. I was dating my high school sweetheart. We hung out for three years as strictly friends. Spring/Summer of 2001 Eddie B got divorced from his first wife. I had broken up with my long time, yet verbally abusive high school sweetheart, a few months beforehand. Ed and I had lost touch for a few months. Then out of the blue Eddie B text me to hang out. We began to spend more time together.

I’m a Guys’ kind of Girl

I used to only hang out with males. I had no time for the emotional aspect of being a girls’ girl. It wasn’t uncommon for me to be the only girl with a group of guys. Through hanging out in the group Eddie B and I started talking more and getting to know him better. Eddie B and I used to explore  DC together. Hop on the Metro and figure out the destination later. It was a fun summer and by the end. A guy I thought of as my best friend was slowly turned into boyfriend material.

Christian but not a Believer

At the time I knew God but wanted nothing to do with Him. I equated legalistic religious rules with Christianity. So, I was not about that life. My parents forced me to attend a Christian college to help “build my faith. I was raised Christian, but I was far from a Believer. By the end of my college experience, I was more Atheist than Christian who was not my parent’s intention. I was a PARTY GIRL! Always down to do anything. I spent many happy hours in Adams Morgan, DC underage drinking and partying and often stumbling into my apartment at night.

When your best friend becomes your boyfriend

Ed and I started dating the middle of that summer. By October of that year. I was pregnant with our first daughter. My Senior year at a Christian college with a growing Scarlett letter was a memorable and isolating experience. I only had Eddie B to share it with, and that’s when I had to grow up. I already lived off campus, so Ed and I moved in together for a brief period. At the same time, I was trying to leave my roommates and living situation. So, Ed and I moved in with his Mom for about four months before we needed to move on our own. During all of this, we had gotten engaged at Union Station but didn’t want to be a pregnant bride. So…

Shotgun Wedding

My Christian college had available housing but only for married couples. Believe it or not, there were quite a few Juniors and Seniors who got their “Mrs. Degree.” Coincidentally, out of the five couples that we knew that got married that year. Ed and I are the only ones who are still married. The other four got big beautiful weddings, and we got an enduring loving marriage.  We are also the only couples in that group who had a shotgun wedding at the Justice of the Peace. All my friends got the whole wedding experience but for me.

Fantasy into Reality

We have been talking about renewing our vows for about five years. It was also probably one of the hardest years of our marriage. By year ten we were like “We should renew our vows.” We wanted to at our ten year anniversary but couldn’t afford it. I’ve always wanted a big wedding. When I was in high school, I planned every detail of my wedding. In my mind, my High school sweetheart and I were going to have this lavish wedding I planned. Despite the realities of life I still held on to my fantasy of pretty white gown, handsome groom walking down the aisles with Bubbles trailing behind us. I would watch “Yes to the Dress” on occasion. We are fantasizing about my wedding that never happened.

Then one day…

My Sister and I were talking about the wedding I have been planning for 15 years. David’s Bridal annual $99 sale was happening that day.  Out of curiosity, we went and just so happen to bring the girls, my Mom, two of my sisters and little niece. It was a Godcidence they all came. In our naivety, we thought you could just walk in and try on dresses. “Uh no!” As “Frederic” told us.  “You have to have an appointment!” We didn’t have an appointment but as we are walking out — a former client of mine who worked there tapped my shoulder.

“YES! to the dress

After telling her the story she “squeezed me in between appointments.” Many beautiful dresses later I found “The One.” When you find “The One,”  you have to buy it. BUT we were just window shopping, AND the dream dress was $800 marked down to $300 and not in the budget. Although, I found “the dress.” I told my former client I wasn’t prepared to spend $300. She said, “Hold on!” walked away with my dress and came back a few minutes later after I had gotten dress. We were about to leave; she asked if I was sure and said, “Check the tag again!” I turned it over and stapled on top of the original tag was in big red “David Bridal $99! #blessed I had and did buy it that day with no wedding plans but the perfect dress. And then the planning began. We were going to have a destination Vow Renewal in Jamaica, Dec.18, 2018.

Unexpected Postponement

Everything was planned. Then several events happened..I broke my ankle and was on unemployment for four months which was financially hard. I returned to work and just as we began to see a breakthrough in finances. Eddie B ruptured his Achilles tendon and was out for the majority of his the summer, which is when my husband trains Basketball players and brings in a nice income. Instead of working my husband was on the couch. We had to cancel our December destination wedding, and I gave up on the idea of having a wedding for the moment.

Family Vacation

Then enters 2019… We try to have a family vacation every 2-3 years. Usually, Spring break because my husband who is also a substitute teacher is off.  This year Milah decided one day she wanted to visit her Great Grandmother. My Mom, who is my travel agent found tickets for our family of five. $328 round trip TOTAL!  Thanks, Frontier for letting kids fly free! We felt obligated to go! It began as a typical family vacation itinerary; theme parks, Zoo trip, and Historical Sites.

I’m having a wedding

Then one day, after my morning devotion and prayer. I had a random thought of “What if we renew our vows in Texas; where most of may family already live?”The only thing was Eddie B’s family had to be there so; I called his Mom. She was willing and able to go to the renewal in Texas. Next, I asked my Grandmother who was ecstatic at the idea of having another wedding at her home in her backyard. Finally, I had to ask Eddie B (who is usually down for mostly anything) and another, Yes! Here it is six weeks later and in a few days will be taking our family vacation to Texas and renewing our vows.

Growing Old with your Soulmate

Eddie B and I have grown so much the last 18 years our friendship. From wild God-less college kids (Ed knew the Lord & attended Church but I was trying to discover my faith-without God) to parents and Believers.

The one thing that has remained constant is I get to live life with my best friend. We’ve figured out the marriage part (at least the first 15 years) which many don’t. Now we get the wedding too. I can’t wait to celebrate with my family,  our love and see my fantasy come to life. Sharing the experience with my girls is also going to be memorable.

So, check out my IG Story or Highlights for #EdDeRound2 and share in our love and Round 2! April 19th I will be saying “I do” all over again to my best friend!

Have you ever considered renewing your vows?

Easy family meals with Perdue Farms Easy Gathering Box

This is a sponsored post from Perdue Farms although I am compensated for this post. My thoughts are my own.  My Full Disclosure Policy

Planning family meals made easy

When I meal planned family friendly dinners consistently. We saved money, ate better and had more time to connect.  That is something that I want to get back to in 2020. After a very busy 2019 I am reflecting and looking back on the things I want to change in the New Year.  I want to go back to having family meals together. With work, sports and extracurricular schedules. It’s really hard to make time for family dinners like when the girls were little.  I find when the meals are planned and I have all the ingredients family dinners are less effort.  Perdue Farms Easy gathering Bundle Box inspired me to get back into meal planning.

how to meal plan family meals in 30 days

Something that I used to do and want to begin again is meal planning for 30 days.  It helps me budget better and makes shopping much easier. Having a variety of options and all the ingredients makes me want to cook more as well. It’s the prepping and planning that I don’t like but I love to make a delicious meal.

How do you plan family meals for 30 days?

I found its very easy to meal plan 30 different meals for the family if you get them involve.  I make a list with 3 columns. One for the diva’s, one for my husband and one for me with 10 spaces to fill their favorite meal.  It’s really that simple and I find that they very rarely duplicate but if they do it’s 30 days and a family fave it will get eaten anyways.  The goal is to have a variety and make something that every one will eat.

Perdue Farms Easy Gathering Bundle Box

I recently got to try Perdue Farm Easy Gathering Bundle which is a new meat subscription box from Perdue Farms. You can have a variety of meats shipped directly to your door.  Ready to be placed in your freezer or thawed and cooked. It made meal planning even easier because I didn’t have to do the shopping.

Where can you get organic chicken and premium meat for family meals?

Since attending Shift Con I have been trying to make sustainable efforts and to eat organic meat.  With Perdue Farms Easy Gathering Bundle Box I am able to do both. Perdue Farms does not raise chicken conventionally as well as they work with small local farmers.  The box was full recyclable and all the products were encased in brown recyclable paper and not plastic.

Easy Family Meals you can make in under 20 minutes

It was easy to add the Perdue Farms Easy Gathering Bundle box to my monthly meal plan.  I made some of our family favorites. Highlighting my husband and my diva’s three favorites.  One meal was a tie! My husband loved the Pulled Pork Sliders on Gluten Free Ciabatta Rolls with Apple Coleslaw, Sweet Potato Fries and Salad.  This was an easy three ingredient hit!!

Niman Ranch Barbeque Pulled Pork Sliders with Apple Coleslaw

Niman Ranch Kielbasa Stir-Fry

Niman Ranch Kielbasa Stir-Fry is Kyhia and Milah’s favorite. Its one of my favorite meals to cook because it takes about 20 minutes.  It’s so easy and a healthier option when we need a meal quick in the evenings.

This meal is a plate cleaner with the family and its really easy to make.  Even if you’re not the best cook you can’t mess this one up. Adding seasonings like oregano, basil or Italian Seasoning and dinner is ready.  You can add a few Niman Ranch Uncured Kielbasa to your Perdue Farm Easy Gathering  Bundle Box.  You get to choose what meats you want delivered directly to your door.

What to put in your gym bag?

This post contains Amazon Affiliate links of the items I put in my gym bag, which I make a commission from the purchase through the links. Although I am compensated for these product purchase, all of my thoughts are my own   My Full Disclosure Policy

I remember when I first started going to the gym, I had no idea what to put in my gym bag? Now, I have collected all the tools I need to get creative in the gym and support my workouts. I have everything I need to pack my gym bag for a woman to be prepared to workout.  There are so many gym bags you can use and I will share the best gym bag to have but the bag is less important than what’s in it.  The gym has all the equipment you need, but adding a few accessories in your gym bag can be great for your workout.

Here is what’s in my gym bag:

What I put in my gym bag I need to get the best workout possible and be prepared.

Gloves and Straps

When I lift heavy, I have to use gloves and lifting straps to protect my hands and help my grip.

I always have a pair of Weight lifting gloves that are well-made, ventilated, and if they have wrist straps, are even better. I good pair of gloves can make for a great lifting session.

I also have a pair of Lifting straps in my bag that I like to use for deadlifts. It gives me a stronger grip and protects my hands when I am deadlifting.  These were a game-changer when I began to deadlift over my bodyweight.

Gym bag for women

Sliders

Core sliders are a great tool, and I like to add sliders to my workout often.  I love the MomSanity Core Sliders because of their shape.  The slider design makes them a superior slider than others I have tried.

Foam Rollers

I keep two little foam rollers in my bag, and yes, I use them often.  These two small tools are tiny but mighty in getting knots our sore muscles and Self-myofascial release, aka foam rolling.  I love the Trigger Point Hand and Feet ball. I have three and keep one at home, one in my purse (yes, in my purse), and one always in my bag.  Over the summer, I attended the IDEA World and discovered my new love, the Mini Pso-Rite.  This thing is AH-mazing in releasing trigger points.  It really does hurt so good, and I think everyone should carry one.  I also have the Pso-Rite, which has helped so much with my hip pain. It’s a little too big for a gym bag, that’s why the Mini is great to take anywhere!

the best gym bag

Stretching Strap

Until my injury, I didn’t realize the value of a stretching strap.  But they are really inexpensive and very effective in helping you stretch. Especially if you’re not flexible, it allows you to get the added pull that you may not be able to do on your own. I always have my stretching strap balled up at the bottom of my bag. Just in case I need to stretch deeper.

Pen & Paper

There are many apps to track your progress, but I love good old pen and paper.  I usually follow my progress in a notebook.  There is an app for that, but if your phone is about to die.  Pen and paper to the rescue. I always have my program notebook in my gym bag.

gym bag for women

Headphones

I cannot work out without music and not just any music but my music.  I am kind of a brat when it comes to my music. If my headphones die, then my workout ends.  I just can’t stay focused and motivated without music blaring in my ears.  For over a year, I have had AfterShokz Treks Air not in my ears but actually outside my ears.  I love Aftershokz. They use Bone Conduction to give you sound but allow you to be aware of your surrounds.  These are meant for runners and their safety outdoors. As a lifter, I love how they stay put in my workouts.  Before, I would lose headphones while I kettlebell swung or box jump, but my AfterShokz Treks Air stays put and play great.  I can’t workout without them.

gym bag for bodybuilding

Resistance Bands

Resistance Bands of any kind because I love using resistance bands for different things but mostly activation. I have Fabric Booty bands that I love! They don’t leave marks. They don’t roll-up and become a tourniquet. I also use handled resistance bands. They’re great for activation during your warmup. I also like “Superbands” or pullup assistant bands!  They are great to add eccentric resistance to a free weight movement. Bands are an easy thing to pack in your gym.

Ankle Cuffs for cable machine

I like using eccentric resistance.  With bands and especially with cables because they require you to use your core. An excellent exercise for glutes and hamstrings a cable cuffed to your ankle.  Ankle Cuffs for Cable Machines are great to have on hand because not all gyms have cuffs, so I have my own in my bag.  Not a necessity, but I am always prepared on leg day.

Sports Bra

One of the most uncomfortable things is walking around in a sweaty sports bra.  I typically leave the gym and head straight to the shower, but sometimes I need to run errands, so having an extra sports bra on hand is helpful.

what to put in my gym bag

Leggings

Having an extra change of clothes is just ideal. For those just in case moments, I try to have a full set of workout clothes available for just in case moments. Leggings are a must-have in my gym bag.

Towel

Having a towel packed for sweaty workouts are a must-have in your gym bag. Having a towel packed has saved me in the past.

Wipes

Having wipes available for post-workout are great.  I try to have a Shower Pill available for after the gym.

Deodorant and Toiletries

I always have a deodorant on hand.  Pack an extra in your gym bag.  I am still on the search for an excellent natural deodorant after trying so many.  I feel after about two weeks my body adapts and I need a new one. If you have any recommendations, I am more than willing to try because I have had no luck with the Natural deodorant.  But I do keep deodorant in my gym bag. I also have a first aid kit in my bag that mostly has band-aids because gym germs are gross. I also have things like tampons just in case and chapstick, lotion.  All the little toiletries that you would carry in your purse.  I keep in a pouch always ready in my gym bag.

gym bags

Hand Sanitizer

The gym is dirty enough said, make sure that you have a good hand sanitizer. I prefer Probiotic HandSanitizer like Dessert Essence.  It kills 99% of the germs but gives leaves the good bacteria that you’re microbiome needs.  Its also less drying compared to other hand Sanitizers.  Use DEprobioticpower for 30% off your purchase

probiotic hand sanitizer

Sunscreen

Unless you play an outdoor sports sunscreen seems crazy, but I have Bare Republic Sports Sunscreen stick in my bag at all times.  It came in handy when I had my outdoor workout at Empower Summer camp. It was hot, and the sun was beaming on the asphalt. I am so glad I was prepared, and you should prepare yourself.

Klitch

Klitch is a clip for your shoes. The one thing that you don’t want in your gym bag is sweaty stinky shoes. The Klitch, clips your shoes securely to the outside of your gym bag. All of my kids have one for their shoe changs

CBD Salve

I have shared my experience with CBD, especially with my ankle.  It’s something that I keep at my bedside, in my car, purse and also in my gym bag.  I have been grateful many times for having CBD available for my aches, pains, and sore muscles.  I would make sure your gym bag has some too.  I highly recommend PlusCBD Oil  Extra Strength or Medterra CBD or Charlottes Web CBD, which would be my first choice. These three CBDs are my top three choices, and I have had relief with them all.

Barbell pad

Barbell pad protects your traps or neck when your back squatting or your hips for hip thrusters with the Barbell which is what I mostly use it for I don’t do Back Squats. This is probably one of the most used accessories in my bag.  Especially when using the Barbell.

best gym bags

My Takeya Waterbottle

I never leave home without my Takeya Water Bottle.  It keeps my drinks ice cold and I love the spout top its easy to keep clean.  The replacement water sealers are $2.99 and free shipping and I switch it out every other month.  I have had my Takeya‘s for over three years and its still going strong!

Everything I need is packed and ready to go. So, when I am at the gym I have no excuse to get what I need done. I can add variety to my workout and have everything I need post-workout to be around other humans. This is what I put in my gym bag.

What’s in your gym bag?
